Heraldry

Arundel Castle is full of heraldry, tracing back the lineage of the Dukes of Norfolk and Earls of Arundel from the beginning of heraldry itself. Come and trace the ways in which the current Earl Marshal, head of the Royal College of Arms, displays his coats of arms through the Castle and the stories behind the designs

Furniture

Arundel Castle contains the cream of the collections from three great family houses – Worksop Manor, Norfolk House and Arundel Castle. Follow our experienced guide as she explores the styles, functions and materials involved in one of the great private collections and recounts the stories behind their acquisition.

Paintings

Within the Castle is one of the great private collections of paintings, including works by van Dyke, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Mytens and Lely. Join our knowledgeable guide as he reveals the secrets and symbolism hidden in the pictures and what they tell us about the subjects.

Hidden History

The Howards are one of the great families of English history, dominating the political and social landscape for the last 500 years. Come and hear the less well-known stories and discover some of the family’s more colourful characters – the Third Duke who congratulated Henry VIII on the execution of his own son; the Jacobean Duchess who refused her husband his conjugal rights after he deserted the Cause; the Eleventh Duke who could only be bathed when drunk and insensible…

The Medieval Castle

An exploration of the original fortress, including the Keep, Inner Gate House, Barbican (not usually open to visitors) and the Fitzalan Chapel. Discover the purpose and design of one of the oldest castles in the country and the stories of the d’Albini and Fitzalan families who built and defended it.
